Healthy Actions for the Knees in Yoga

In this focused mini-course, Doug Keller draws on decades of study and yoga therapeutics work to give you a complete picture of the knee, what makes it vulnerable, what makes it strong, and what to do about it on the mat.

What you'll learn

In this focused mini-course, Doug Keller draws on decades of study and yoga therapeutics work to give you a complete picture of the knee, what makes it vulnerable, what makes it strong, and what to do about it on the mat.

In this mini-course, Doug covers:

  • What “joint play” is and how to set students up for better joint play in asana.
  • Which muscles have the greatest impact on knee alignment, and how to cue them safely in key poses
  • How tibial torsion can be structural and what that means for the knee joint
  • Spotting the alignment habits that stress the knee — and the alternatives that also improve hip mobility and arch strength
  • When to reconsider common yoga cues like “feet parallel” and “lift your kneecaps” — and know when and how to refine them for different bodies
  • A hands-on asana exploration designed to bring these principles to life and practice, not just theory.

What's included

  • Complimentary slides — Doug’s comprehensive slides covering anatomy, structural variation, biomechanics, and application
  • Practical asana video — a guided movement exploration bringing the health actions directly onto the mat
  • Lifetime access — return to the material whenever you need it
  • CE-eligible for Yoga Alliance members

This video mini-course was captured during a live session and has been segmented to help you find and revisit specific topics more easily.

Who this is for

This mini-course is for yoga teachers who want to move beyond generic alignment cues and understand why knees might hurt in practice — and what actually helps. It’s for yoga therapists who want a focused reference. And it’s for any dedicated practitioner who has experienced knee discomfort and wants real answers, not workarounds.

If you’ve ever watched a student wince in pigeon pose and wished you knew exactly what to say, this is for you.

About Instructor

Doug Keller

In addition to teaching the postural practice of hatha yoga as well as pranayama and meditation, I have chosen as my focus on sharing insights into what yoga has to offer as wisdom in the face of chronic pain and health issues, which is an evolving field that promises to be a vital part of the future of yoga. The expansion of yoga beyond the practices taught in more ancient times is, to me, an expression of the freedom at the heart of yoga and of consciousness itself. This freedom was described in tantric philosophy as not simply 'liberation' or 'moksha,' but 'Swatantrya' — the freedom of Consciousness to expand and create through its own inspiration.
