This practice revisits the essential foundations of yin yoga: the three principles of the practice, a functional approach to working with the body, and skillful options to meet students at different levels. It serves as a welcoming introduction for those new to yin yoga and as a thoughtful refresher for experienced practitioners who wish to reconnect with the basics. The class will run approximately 70 minutes, including shavasana, and will be followed by time for group reflection, discussion and questions.
The sequence focuses on the spine and includes: Seated Meditation; Three-Part Daoist Breath; Butterfly; Straddle; Caterpillar; Sphinx; Saddle; Reclining Twist; and Shavasana.
Props are encouraged. A bolster and something to sit on are ideal. If you don’t have a bolster, roll a blanket or thick towel tightly on your mat to create a firm substitute. If you don’t have a block, a sturdy book works well.
